Cut Back on Powerpoint Bullets

Too many presentations are like trial by PowerPoint: too many slides, too many words, too many points. Better to take a presentation—zen approach with more visual, less wordy slides.

One of the problems with PowerPoint is that it homogenizes your message. Everything looks the same, from headlines to bullet points. Even if you say something memorable, it will be hard for the audience to pick it out and remember it in a sea of similar-looking slides. Here are my pointers for an effective slide presentation:

Make yourself and your message the star, not the slides: Fight the monotony by limiting your slides to those that dramatize your message.

Follow the 10/20/30 Rule: In his book The Art of the Start, Guy Kawasaki advises people to limit themselves to ten slides, twenty minutes, and thirty-point fonts when making a pitch: “The fewer slides you need, the more compelling your idea.”

Use pictures, diagrams, and illustrations: Don’t rely on just words to make your points. Be dramatic visually.

Develop a brand look for your slides: Put your logo on the master slide, add a signature background color, or have a graphic artist design a branded template that will set your presentation apart.
